On 8th September 2023, Deputy Lieutenant Stephen Pearce QPM visited The Guildhall in Plymouth, which was the venue for a musical show from three fantastic vocal groups. Brought together by The Kingsmen Chorus, The Callington Community Gospel Choir and The Plymouth Rock Choir entertained a sell-out crowd and raised money and awareness for BASICS Devon (British Association for Immediate Care). This network of volunteer emergency doctors who provide immediate access to specialist medical care are staffed by volunteer medics who respond in their own vehicles, anytime and anywhere in Devon.
The reason the evening went ahead came from Barrington Sowden, Chair of the Kingsmen who had to dial 999 after a medical emergency. No ambulance was available but a doctor and paramedic from BASICS responded immediately – ‘I wanted to say thank you and to give something back.’ The event was also supported by The Lord and Lady Mayoress of Plymouth, The Devonport Field Gun Association, members of the NHS, the Ukrainian community and volunteer groups.
